Meet the Women Who Are Saving Mother Earth by Saving Seeds.
Soledad Saburido Álvarez has been the coordinator of the SOMOS SEMILLA Seed Library, in San Miguel de Allende since 2015, when the project began. Born in Galicia, Spain, she has a degree in Plant Biology and developed her
PhD with a thesis based on the study of the evolution and genetics of the common bean. In 2012 she arrived in Mexico for a postdoctoral stay at the National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity (LANGEBIO), CINVESTAV;
after that period she began the first steps of founding SOMOS SEMILLA. The community project received a scholarship in 2015 from “The Pollination Project: Seeding Projects That Change the World.” The Library continues to grow and has been responsible for carrying out numerous workshops, courses and events related to the conservation of seeds in the area, including coordinating in March 2017 the first Mexican Meeting of Seed
Guardians.

Emily C-D is the artistic part of the SOMOS SEMILLA Seed Library since becoming involved in 2016. For Emily, illustrating the world of seeds is part of a trajectory of merging her art with nature. Her artwork seeks to cultivate wonder and respect for the living world and our place within it, be it directly communicated through the subject matter of a piece, or more metaphorically understood through her choice of materials. Originally from Maryland, she has lived for 10 years in Mexico, collaborating with diverse communities on both sides of the border to transform walls, floors, bridges, fences and rivers. In Baltimore, Maryland she collaborated for many years
with the Community Lot Team at Civil Works transforming vacant lots into gardens in neighborhoods suffering from urban blight. In the Isthmus of Oaxaca, she is a long-time collaborator of the Gubidxa Gallery, an
independent cultural space with an environmental focus. She has illustrated and published books celebrating both projects.

Mariana Macías Medellín has been collaborating with the SOMOS SEMILLA Seed Library since 2018. Originally from San Luis Potosí, she has a degree in Geography, with experience in the development of participatory mapping.
Involved in community development processes, she collaborated for a year in a farmer training center (CECACI) in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, impulsing there continued formation of training in natural agriculture,
permaculture and popular education. She currently contributes to the effort of caring for seeds in her daily practice of tending a small garden in the country. She is currently studying a master's degree in Regional Rural
Development Sciences, at the Autonomous University of Chapingo, developing her thesis on the care and defense of seeds and the participation of women in this work.

SOMOS Semilla Seed Library brings education and food sovereignty to the community, strengthening the long-term health of our environment through seed saving. Our work is interconnected to a growing international movement of free seed advocates.
